What's wrong with the Republican Party these days? There's a new front runner every two weeks. Michele Bachmann peaked early and hasn't been on top since. Mitt Romney then seemed to be on top until Rick Perry joined the race. Rick Perry was going strong until he opened his mouth and flubbed in major debates. Mitt Romney went back to the lead only to be overtaken by the immensity of the Cain train. Then everyone found out that Herman Cain is a womanizer and diabolical liar and so goes Mitt Romney back to the top. Now Newt Gingrich is finding himself the front runner despite his multiple affairs and receiving millions from the controversial Freddie Mac. The Republican party seems desperate--testing every possible candidate before they ultimately decide on who will undoubtedly be facing Obama in 2012: Mitt Romney.

Mitt Romney has always been there for the Republican Party. After every new top candidate craze ends in disappointment resulting from some perpetrated corruption or ineptness, Romney is there smiling saying, "I told you so." But Republicans hate Romney. Republican Joe Scarborough has said that Washington insiders of the conservative persuasion tell him that they will likely not even vote if Romney is the candidate. Writer Robert Creamer states, "...three-fourths of the Republican primary electorate simply doesn't like Romney. They don't like him--and perhaps more important--they don't trust him."

Romney is of the dreaded 1% at a time when the 99% are protesting and occupying cities across America. He's a multi-millionaire with multiple mansions. He's owned several businesses and was responsible for the firing of hundreds of employees under his restructuring strategies which of course funneled the money to him. He's slick; he looks, acts, and thinks like the 1% which hurts him in a general election against Obama.

Romney care talk has been a focus of the debates and hurts him with Tea Party Republicans. Obama's health care plan was actually modeled on Romney care; they are quite similar. Romney's main defense against this outrage is his position now that individual states should be able to choose whatever program they want and that the sweeping nation wide health care reform the Democrats want is illegal.

The worst of Romney is his seemingly lack of any core values. This results in flip-flopping which the Christian right abhors. Huffington Post headline: Mitt Romney Supported State-funded Abortions in 2002. PolitiFact headline: Romney Used To Support Gun Control. Bloomberg headline: Romney in 2006 Backed Immigration Stance He Now Deems 'Amnesty.'

Unfortunately for the GOP, even with these problems, Romney is the only real candidate. After exhausting the fifteen minutes of every other candidate, the new flavor of the month is Newt Gingrich. Gingrich, the elder statesman that he is, carries too much baggage. And it's the worst kind of baggage. While Newt was speaker of the House and pushing for the impeachment of Clinton, he was having his own affair with a congressional aid. While speaker, he was forced to pay $300,000 in penalties in yet another ethics scandal. He divorced his cancer stricken wife, and then got married and divorced again. He was paid $1.6 million from Freddie Mac in which he gave ill informed advice for a program to expand home ownership. He's for amnesty for illegal aliens. He would be destroyed by the media in a general election against Obama.

Among the other candidates, Ron Paul has a strong following but cannot seem to gain mainstream support. Rick Santorum's solution to everything is to make abortion illegal. Jon Huntsman, perhaps the candidate with the less baggage, is way too moderate. And so it goes that Romney will win the nomination not so much for what he is--but what he isn't. Behind the curtain, laughing at this mess, is the only true winner out of all of this: Barack Obama.

I'm freshly 18 and am starting to pay attention to all the political buzz in the expectation that I will be voting next year. I have much more research to do before I feel educated on the issues and candidates enough to vote, but Mitt Romney has sparked my interest. Despite being one of the 1%, I disagree with your statement that he lacks morals. He is a Mormon, and he follows closely the Mormon doctrine. I am a Christian and do not consider Mormonism to be a part of Christianity - but rather, it's own religion. However; I feel like his dedication to God and to his religion HELP his platform, rather than hurting it.

Good and informative hub. I think Newt will soon crash and you may be correct that Romney will get the nomination even though his work ethics are undesirable. Huntsman seems to be the only one with brains and is down to earth but that doesn't seem to appeal to most Repubs.

Thanks Auntie. I like Huntsman the best but you're right he's way too moderate for what the Republican party has become now.

Hi Laura, thanks for the comment. Romney may be a moral guy but politically he seems to change his stances to whatever view he thinks is popular at the time. Issues are complex so I understand shifting your views over time because changing circumstances but he seems to have made it a habit!

Good analysis. I am a Democrat but would be okay with Romney being elected President. I agree with a lot of the statements made in this Hub. We'll see how the election season goes!
